Mahogany Drop Leaf Table


Object Description: Drop Leaf Table, spiral legs. 19th century. Primary wood: Mahogany (Swietenia spp.) Coating: Shellac

Condition Before Treatment

Structural: All joints sound. Small molding piece missing.

Surface: 8" area of severe water damage to tabletop coating.

Treatment Performed

Structural: Profile of molding was taken and new molding was cut and profiled with scratchstock. After fit and glued in place, molding was inpainted and patinated to blend with surroundings.

Surface: After unsuccessful attempts to reamalgamate the damaged portion of finish, the coating was completely chemically removed from the top. New shellac finish was applied tinted with NGR dyes. After curing, top was hand rubbed with Liberon #0000 steel wool and Bristol Cream polish.
