What is Patina?

Every piece has a history. Every piece has its own story. And over years of use, it develops its own unique markings and wear from that history, giving it its own character. This often consists of surface grime and soiling, wear patterns, scratches, substrate warpage, natural fading of color, etc. It may also include texture from wood grain and tool marks. This is patina. To preserve patina is to preserve a history. The romance of keeping that story alive is the motivation for the preservation of antiques.
